How to Measure a Window Channel Balance
Measure the metal channel only. Do not include the plastic fittings when measuring balance length.
Metal channel length
Lay the removed balance flat and measure the exposed metal section end to end. Do not add the top or bottom plastic fitting. If you get an unusual result such as 25 13/16", measure again and record the actual result rather than automatically rounding it to 26 inches.
Channel width
Common channel balances are called nominal 1/2-inch balances even when the actual metal width may measure about 9/16 inch. Record what you measure and use the common nominal label only as a comparison clue.
Bottom shoe depth
Measure heel-to-toe, also described as front-to-back depth, across the bottom shoe. Useful comparison values include 7/8 inch, 1 inch, 1-3/32 inch, and 1-1/8 inch.
Stamp information
Write down every visible character, for example 25 3 JR CALDWELL. A stamp is not usually a complete part number. It helps with spring strength or calibration and must be compared with the physical fittings and dimensions.
